Charles and the chocolate

I lost Charles for a bit this morning. I was busy paying bills over the phone and fixing a setting error from updating my phone. I realized Charles was very quiet. I walked through the dining room and spied him sitting under the table. He had gotten into our advent calendar with treat boxes and was eating the Hershey's kisses!
You can see one box was put in sideways and some if those backwards boxes are dated for the 20th or other future dates!

Last night he got in trouble with the elves because he shook the table trying to get the chocolate and made them fall to the floor. Daddy had to get a spatula to pick them back up. (Remember, if they are touched they lose their magic.)

The Advent wreath has been moved to a higher, safer place.

Coloring

Charles is coloring Christmas pictures this morning. As I encouraged him to color blue for Grover, he spontaneously named their body parts as he colored each one: eye, nose, leg, hand, head. So cute!

First Hanukkah

We had a blended Thanksgiving this year with Miss Gloria's family. Miss Gloria is Jake's special friend. She is Jewish, and this year Thanksgiving and Hanukkah were on the same day, so the boys got to celebrate Hanukkah for the first time. After dinner, Miss Gloria's sister read the boys a Hanukkah story, then they got to help light the menorah, but most exciting was getting their Hanukkah gift!

Watch out, ornaments!

Charles has taken out three ornaments already! The first, in all fairness, was my Donald Duck jumping jack that has popped apart each year, but the next was a snow globe that he dropped against another snow globe so that is puddled in my Christmas storage box on top of my nutcracker and nativity boxes. Poor Mickey Mouse will no longer play Santa in a snowstorm. The third ornament was William's keepsake Hallmark ornament from age 2: Buzz and Woody flying through the air. Charles was playing with the "toys" and making flying noises when I realized they were not play figures. Buzz's leg had been broken off as had Woody's arm. It was like life imitating art--except Woody's arm was repaired with super glue rather than being re-stitched.

Ta-dah! I did it!

Ta-dah! I did it! That's the phrase out of Charles' mouth these days. He completes his wooden puzzle and cheers. He stacks his Pooh, Tigger, and Eeyore toys and cheers. Just now, he stuck the lollipop stick from his bank sucker in the hole in the foot of a Ninja Turtle and cheered. All the many accomplishments of a two-year-old!

Charles loves Elmo

This says it all! =)

Bowl hair to baby boy--I hope

I noticed Charles' hair had grown into a definite bowl shape. I know it is a traditional toddler cut, but it just doesn't appeal to me for Charles. At the same time, I want him to look like a little boy. I tried my best to achieve such a cut.

Powers!

Charles and William were invited to Ian's Wild Kratts birthday party on Sunday. Ian's mommy, Tara, made creature power t-shirts with laminated creature powers that could be Velcro-ed onto the shirts as the children completed their tasks to earn powers. That night, Charles took his powers to bed with him. The next morning, he ran to the bathroom to get his shirt and brought it to me calling "powers!"  Ok, we'll wear the dirty shirt again!

Charles and his friends

Charles loves Elmo. He watches him on TV; he eagerly went to bed last night when I showed him Elmo was already in bed asleep. Today, Elmo has friends. Nemo ("fish") and Woody have been carried to church and to a birthday party along with Elmo. Those tiny little arms if Charles' are stretched around his best friends.

Snow--wow!

It is snowing! I picked up Charles to take him outside to look at the first snow of the season and to see his reaction now that he is a little older. When I told him to see what was going on, he said, "Raining?" I answered, "Snowing!" He replied, "Wow!"

Talker

Charles is expanding his vocabulary. Today is Veterans Day, so Daddy did not have school, but William does. We just got William on the bus, and after taking some pictures if Charles with his Elmo and Curious George, I invited Charles inside to see what Daddy is doing. Charles came in the door, "Daddy, where are you? Daddy, where are you?"

The other day, we had on Imagination movers while feeding the boys breakfast and getting ready for school. When they do their "reach high, think big, work hard, have fun" Charles ran over to the tv to mimic their movements--including the high five at the end. He jumped up with his little hand in the air and added his little "whoo!" to the cheer. So cute!

Charles at his worst

So let me tell you about my morning. Roofing company calls to tell me the roofing guys are minutes away to repair the drip in my roof, so I have no time for a shower. They don't see a problem--the roof is good. I had to go up to the attic to show where the drip is; they banged on the roof, saying it was the "easement," (Ithink--it was hard to understand his accent)and then they left without telling me. I will have to call to find out if all is good.

Later, Charles hid in the corner of my bedroom and grunted, so I took him to the potty. He pooped a little, so I cleaned him up and he ran away. That is normal silliness for him--running away.  I went to get his diaper and found him back in the corner with a puddle on a newspaper and Pluto's plush snout wet. (Playing puppy a little too seriously?!?) I cleaned up the floor and am working on Pluto. Finally I got my shower. As I was putting on my face lotion, Charles comes in holding out his hands signaling he needed me to clean them. They were covered in poopy!!! He had reached in his diaper and squished the BM all over. He had also stepped in some and had a trail from downstairs all the way into my bathroom. I took him to the bathtub to clean him--first having to take all the toys out to keep them from being contaminated. He wanted to swim and splash the poopy water everywhere. I got him cleaned, dressed, and then gated him in his room so that I could clean the trail upstairs and down the steps where there was a mass squished in the front of one carpeted step in addition to the dots left from his hands pulling him up the stairs. I finally made it into the den where I found two squished patches in front of the sofa on the carpet and print marks on the sofa cover where he had pulled himself up off the floor.

The sofa cover is in the wash, his stained shirt is in the wash. Pluto is drying from enzyme spray. Charles is still penned in his room.

Dog sledding

Yep, this is the boys' new version of dog sledding--riding the giant stuffed dog down the front steps. Laughter was in abundance! I had to remind myself that I did the same thing growing up, but we rode in sleeping bags down the entire flight of wooden steps in the front hall if my parents' house. Three carpeted steps surely couldn't cause too much damage. (Famous last words? I hope not.)

Scaredy cow?

The boys and I had lunch at Chick-fil-A today. Charles went to play on the playground with William, but he kept crying. I picked him up and brought him back out to the table to eat his lunch. After a while I realized he was saying "moo" over and over again. He is afraid the big character cow is going to appear in the restaurant like it did this summer. He was terrified, and apparently still holds on to that fear.

This picture is from Cow Appreciation Day this summer when Charles scampered up my shoulder to be saved from the cow.

Fall fun!

Charles is enjoying the fall and everything that goes with it. We have been having warm weather, too, to make it that much better.
We visited the farm to pick apples and pumpkins and go through a corn maze. Charles was very intent on punching holes in his corn maze card just like William.
We took a trip to the zoo where Charles decided to be a cat, and William joined him. (We had seen lots of cats: snow leopards, an ocelot, a lion)
They played in the leaves with our neighbors.
Charles and William made leaf angels!
Charles dressed like a tiger and roared an excellent roar to cheer on our Clemson Tigers.
Next up, Halloween!

Dejected Charles

When Charles is disappointed about something, he has a humorous way of demonstrating is feelings through his body. For example, he just asked for "wahder" before bed, but I have already put him to bed and told him no. He gave a huge vocal sigh, and threw his arms and shoulders forward and rounded down in such a dejected manner as if the world just deflated. It is so pitiful and adorable at the same time.

Rodeo!

We took Charles and William to the rodeo in Atlantic City Saturday night.  Our tradition is to go to the Rainforest Cafe beforehand for dinner.  Charles was infatuated with the fish and the animatronic animals got smiles as we made our way to the table.  However, as soon as we reached the table, Charles started screaming in panic and tried to climb me (even though he was already in my arms).  Cha Cha, the resturant's mascot frog, was walking around getting pictures with families.  Charles is terrified of the giant characters like that.  I had to kind of hide him behind a tree until Cha Cha finally made his way out of our area.

After we sat down in the gorilla section of the rainforest, the gorillas came to life and started their noises and beat their chests.  William loved it--so excited!  Charles had a smile on his face, too, until the little girl at the table next to ours started crying in fear.  Then Charles started started to wonder if there was something to be worried about and began to whine, too.  William kept asking about a thunderstorm, and finally one arrived.  The lights flashed like lightening, the restaurant got dark as if the clouds were rolling in, and the animals throughout the restaurant came alive.  Gorillas, elephants, birds, and whatever else lives in the rainforest began to make all kinds of racket--and so did Charles.  While William was laughing with glee, Charles was crying in fear.  Thank goodness thunderstorms only happen about every half hour, but as the service is rather slow at the Rainforest Cafe, we got to sit through three of them.  William was counting on that!  It's "cool!"

When we got to the rodeo, William seemed a bit tired because he had not napped during the afternoon when we told him to.  The rodeo started at 7:30, their normal bedtime.  Charles, though, was in awe!  He watched the cowboys on the bucking broncos with great interest, but he really enjoyed watching the calf roping.  At first he wasn't so sure about it.  That's when I told him we could cheer for the calves that escaped, "Go Cow!"  But once he watched for a bit, he started cheering and clapping for the cowboys.  They played music while the cowboys tried to get the calves, and Charles just danced and wiggled to the music.  He had a blast!  (Unfortunately, the woman who ended up sitting in front of Charles was not a kid person, which stressed Mommy and Daddy out.  Charles was oblivious to her mood and even tried to share his cowboy hat with her.  Mommy's quick reaction saved stopped this generosity several times.  Charles had a great time, and that's all that matters.)

William eventually got past his fatigued stage to his second wind wild stage, so I took the boys for a walk.  We looked at a couple of the booths, and then we saw a crowd of young men playing some sort of ball throwing game at a booth.  After they walked off, we walked over, and the ladies offered William a chance to shoot a small basketball into a net taped to the wall.  He also got to throw mini footballs onto a velcro football field also taped to the wall.  William did a great job and won candy!  Woo-hoo!  His Skittles were the highlight of his evening.  Charles of course wanted to try.  The woman let him throw the footballs, but he really wanted the basketball.  He did a respectable job of shooting toward the basket.  He won a Twizzlers mini.

We left early, but it was a successful evening.  Both boys had a blast!

Brotherly Love

When William got off the bus today, I had left Charles inside watching Sesame Street. As William and I walked back up the yard to the house, Charles came charging out the front door, calling "William!" and gave him a huge bear hug. It was so sweet!

After lunch, we went outside in the backyard to play tickle run. We also collected black acorns (unusual--I've never seen them before). We then moved into the front yard to collect pine cones. Charles disappeared, so I asked William where he went. He said Charles was in the backyard and went to find him. A little bit later, he came back around front in a panic, saying Charles was missing and would be gone forever. He started crying. I looked up and down the sidewalk to make sure he hadn't wandered and then went to the backyard. I called for Charles and scanned the playhouse, but no Charles. William was frantic and sobbing, "He's lost forever! Charles! Charles!" I calmly walked into the house from the back porch to find Charles standing in front if the TV watching Mickey Mouse Clubhouse with the hibiscus hula. He was perfectly fine. I waved William in. He was shocked that he had been able to get inside by himself and had to calm his tears. He was still crying and telling me the possibility of what could have happened. I had Charles hug William again to reassure him. Oh, my boys.

Elmo!

This past week, Charles has gone totally bonkers over Elmo from Sesame Street. He only wants to watch Elmo on TV (no more Disney or other PBS shows), and he even makes us fast forward through parts of Sesame Street without Elmo. If we are not obliging, he growls "ELMO" at us. William is about to have a fit because he wants his own shows. We also never dealt with anything like this with him.

Last night after bath, Charles spotted my old Grover stuffed animal. It was up on a shelf in William's room to be safe. He is well loved and missing an eye. Charles wanted him. I know toys want to be loved, and that's why I brought him home with us, so I let Charles have Grover. He carried him all over, hugging him tightly. He took him to bed with him. This morning, Charles rounded up the whole Sesame Street crew to cuddle with them.

Adorable Charles

Charles's words are flowing now. He is picking up new words and repeating phrases and sentences all the time! This morning I had to giggle as we got in the car to run errands and he started singing along to Carly Rae Jepsen's song "Call Me, Maybe." He is so funny! But singing is really where his verbal skills are. It is amazing!
(Tuckered out from errands)

He is also thrilled to be wearing his Mickey Mouse sweatshirt with a Mickey Mouse t-shirt underneath. The beaming smile when he got dressed was precious!

He is also fully obsessed with Elmo! He jumps to watch Elmo on TV. He has to read Elmo books at bedtime. Thank goodness we got him the Elmo toy at Sesame Place.

Greenstick Fracture

Today we answered the question of whether or not Charles is broken. Unfortunately, that would be yes. He has a greenstick fracture of the left clavicle. He was an excellent patient at the imaging center, lying perfectly still on the table for his x-rays. I asked the technician what he thought, and he wouldn't say--so I knew it was broken. I took a closer look at the x-ray through the window to the other room and could see the bend. Darn. We waited just a few minutes to get the official word from the radiologist. Next stop: orthopedist tomorrow morning.
And for comparison, the right clavicle

Broken baby?

Charles woke up at 2:00 am Sunday morning holding the left side of his neck and crying "ow." I got him a grape tablet and turned on the tv to try to distract him from his pain, but he was still crying for over an hour. The day before, he and William had been jumping off the bed again, and that night, they rode on Daddy Neigh.
Of course they had to slide off the side of their horse. I figured he may have pulled a muscle. But Sunday morning as we were getting ready for church, he was really favoring his left arm and cried out when his arm was lifted to change his clothes. He also flinched and drew back when I pressed his left collar bone. More Tylenol and a FaceTime call to Granddaddy--put compresses on it. After church, he had a little knot on his collar bone.

Now I was wondering if he had a fracture. We called our pediatrician, but he is still in the hospital, so we got the pediatrician on call, he said if there was a fracture, there is not much that can be done, but again use hot and cold compresses. If he was still complaining Monday, bring him in. Overnight, the bump diminished (still there, but not as large) and I can press on it without Charles shying away or crying out. It is now Tuesday. There is still a little knot and he is saying "ow" again, but I can press the collar bone without recoil. He can also lift his arm over his head with no problem. Oh, this boy!
